Written while attending a jazz concert at Jazz Central Studios in Minneapolis, featuring Thomas Strommen on Saxophone, Eric Graham on Bass, and Patrick Adkins on Piano.

clouds obscure moon
an unknown story lingers
a mystery mysterious
what shall the night bring?
the music doesn’t have a clue.
Why should it? and why should
the moon know a thing?

Discord.

Sometimes the harmony is
right, the chord, the note.
The feeling of right now.
Sometimes it’s read off a
page like a script, a map,
a tangent, a predestination.
Until suddenly it is not,
it goes off-script, but
that’s where it needs to go.

in 2023 the music is
tense and beautiful in its
deeply sad joyfulness pain.
The hard moments are like
rocks in a river flowing
over them that is neither good
or bad, but is definitely there.
Those somber sounds make me
want to cry, the up beat minor
tone battling the off beat tear
in my eye.

Sentimentality.

it’s music after all. What is
“Jazzy,” riffing, improvisation,
melody and dissonance perfectly
like flavors of ear food. so
good that it kills you in just
the right way.
